Blessed to Be a Blessing: Abraham & Sarah's Laughter

By Rev. John Moelker208 words

If we're brutally honest, do we even get to the point where we laugh at the promises of the Lord like Abram and Sarah did? If you think Abraham and Sarah didn't have any doubts, think again.

Genesis 17:17: "Abraham fell facedown; he laughed and said to himself, 'Will a son be born to a man a hundred years old? Will Sarah bear a child at the age of ninety?'"

And when the Lord came to Abraham and Sarah with the news that Sarah would bear a child by the same time next year: "Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, 'After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?'" (Genesis 18:12)

People of God, listen carefully to the words of the Lord in response to this cynical laughter:

"Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year and Sarah will have a son." (Genesis 18:14)

"Is there anything too hard for the Lord?"

The Abraham story provides us with an alternative reality which rescues us from both pride and despair. This story affirms that the world has not been entrusted to humanity alone. In unbelievable graciousness, God has retained the amazing gift of faith and of life.
