Sabbath and Rest: Jerome on Spiritual Rest

By JeromeSource: Jerome - Commentary on Matthew / Letters (Public Domain)166 words

Jerome (d. 420) interpreted Sabbath rest not merely as physical cessation but as spiritual peace. He wrote in his commentary on Matthew: "The true Sabbath is the one in which the soul rests from sin and is at peace with God. Every day can be a Sabbath if the soul is turned toward God." While Jerome supported weekly observance, he was most concerned with the interior dimension of rest.

Jerome connected rest to the command in Psalm 46:10: "Be still and know that I am God." He taught that stillness is not passivity but the highest form of activity -- the soul actively attending to God's presence, actively receiving grace, actively resting in trust.

Practical application: Regardless of which day you observe as Sabbath, practice "spiritual rest" daily. Each evening, consciously release the concerns of the day to God: "Lord, I entrust this to You." Jerome teaches that learning to rest in God daily transforms the weekly Sabbath from a rule to observe into a rhythm to enjoy.
