Show Don't Tell: John 1:1-5
Instead of saying "John opens with theological truths about Jesus," go back before time began. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Before Genesis 1:1—"In the beginning God created"—there was already the Word. He was with God. He was God. "He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made." Every galaxy, every atom, every grain of sand—made through him. Nothing exists that he didn't speak into being. "In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." Present tense: shines. Darkness keeps trying. Darkness keeps failing. The light persists.
