Show Don't Tell: John 11:38-44
Instead of saying "Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead," smell the tomb. Jesus, once more deeply moved, comes to the tomb. It is a cave with a stone laid across the entrance. "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man: "But, Lord, by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days." Four days—Jewish belief said the soul departed completely after three days. This is final. "Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" They take away the stone. Jesus looks up: "Father, I thank you that you have heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that you sent me." Then in a loud voice: "Lazarus, come out!" The dead man comes out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face. "Take off the grave clothes and let him go." The resurrection and the life—calling the dead out of tombs.
