Show Don't Tell: John 20:30-31
Instead of saying "John wrote his Gospel so people would believe," understand the selection. Jesus performs many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. Many other signs—what we have is curated, not comprehensive. "But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." Two purposes: believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God; and through believing, have life. Everything in this Gospel serves those goals. Every sign, every discourse, every "I am" statement—all pointing to who Jesus is so that readers might have life.
