Show Don't Tell: John 2:1-11
Instead of saying "Jesus performed his first miracle at a wedding," taste the best wine last. On the third day a wedding takes place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother is there; Jesus and his disciples have also been invited. When the wine runs out, Jesus' mother says to him: "They have no more wine." A social disaster in that culture. "Woman, why do you involve me? My hour has not yet come." Yet his mother says to the servants: "Do whatever he tells you." Nearby stand six stone water jars, used for ceremonial washing, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. "Fill the jars with water." They fill them to the brim. "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." The master tastes the water that has become wine. He doesn't know where it came from—the servants know. He calls the bridegroom: "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." Six jars, 120 to 180 gallons of the best wine. This, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, reveals his glory—and his disciples believe in him.
