Show Don't Tell: John 21:20-25
Instead of saying "The Gospel ends with the beloved disciple's testimony," hear Jesus redirect comparison. Peter turns and sees that the disciple whom Jesus loves is following them. This is the one who leans back against Jesus at the supper and asks, "Lord, who is going to betray you?" When Peter sees him, he asks: "Lord, what about him?" "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me." Because of this, the rumor spreads among the believers that this disciple will not die. But Jesus does not say that he will not die; he only says, "If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you?" This is the disciple who testifies to these things and who wrote them down. We know that his testimony is true. Jesus does many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written. An ocean of revelation, and we have a cup—but the cup is enough.
