Show Don't Tell: John 4:46-54
Instead of saying "Jesus healed an official's son from a distance," measure the faith journey. Once more he visits Cana in Galilee, where he had turned water into wine. There is a royal official whose son lies sick at Capernaum—about twenty miles away. When this man hears that Jesus has arrived in Galilee from Judea, he goes to him and begs him to come and heal his son, who is close to death. "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will never believe." The official: "Sir, come down before my child dies." "Go, your son will live." The man takes Jesus at his word and departs. While he is still on the way, his servants meet him with the news that his boy is living. When he inquires about the time the boy got better, they tell him: "Yesterday, at one in the afternoon, the fever left him." The father realizes that was the exact time Jesus had said to him, "Your son will live." So he and his whole household believe. This is the second sign Jesus performs after coming from Judea to Galilee. From begging Jesus to come, to taking him at his word, to believing with his whole household—faith grows through the encounter.
