Show Don't Tell: Luke 4:1-13
Instead of saying "Jesus was tempted in the wilderness," feel the hunger and hear the lies. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, leaves the Jordan and is led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he is tempted by the devil. He eats nothing during those days, and at the end of them he is hungry. The devil says: "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread." "It is written: 'Man shall not live on bread alone.'" The devil leads him up to a high place and shows him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. "I will give you all their authority and splendor... if you worship me." "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'" The devil leads him to Jerusalem, to the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here... for it is written..." Satan quotes Scripture now. "It is said: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" When the devil finishes all this tempting, he leaves him until an opportune time. Not defeated—just postponed. The battle continues later.
