Show Don't Tell: Luke 7:1-10
Instead of saying "Jesus healed the centurion's servant," marvel at a soldier's faith. When Jesus finishes teaching, he enters Capernaum. A centurion's servant, whom his master values highly, is sick and about to die. Hearing of Jesus, he sends Jewish elders to ask him to come heal his servant. They plead earnestly: "This man deserves to have you do this, because he loves our nation and has built our synagogue." So Jesus goes with them. But when he is not far from the house, the centurion sends friends: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed." Then the reasoning: "For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." A soldier understands command structures. If Jesus has authority, his word alone is enough. Jesus is amazed. Turning to the crowd: "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." The men return home to find the servant well.
