Show Don't Tell: Mark 8:27-33
Instead of saying "Peter confessed Jesus as Christ and was then rebuked," feel the whiplash. Jesus and his disciples go to villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way, he asks: "Who do people say I am?" They report: John the Baptist; Elijah; one of the prophets. "But what about you? Who do you say I am?" Peter answers: "You are the Messiah." Correct. Jesus warns them not to tell anyone. Then he begins to teach that the Son of Man must suffer many things, be rejected by elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, be killed, and after three days rise again. He speaks plainly about this. Peter takes him aside and begins to rebuke him. The same lips that confessed the Messiah now tell the Messiah he's wrong about his mission. Jesus turns, looks at his disciples, and rebukes Peter: "Get behind me, Satan! You do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns." From rock to stumbling block in moments. The Messiah must suffer.
