Show Don't Tell: Matthew 16:13-20
Instead of saying "Peter confessed Jesus as the Christ," hear the question at Caesarea Philippi. Roman temples everywhere, at the foot of Mount Hermon. Jesus asks: "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, one of the prophets—all good answers, all wrong. "But what about you? Who do you say I am?" The question that changes everything. Peter: "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God." Jesus' response: "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven." Revelation, not deduction. "On this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it." Keys given, binding and loosing authorized. Then strict warning: tell no one that he is the Messiah. Not yet.
