Show Don't Tell: Matthew 22:23-33
Instead of saying "Jesus affirmed the resurrection," hear the ridiculous scenario. Sadducees, who deny resurrection, approach with a puzzle. Seven brothers: the first marries and dies childless; the second takes the widow, dies; all seven, then the woman. "At the resurrection, whose wife will she be?" They think they've made resurrection absurd. Jesus: "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God." They're wrong on both counts. "At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven." The category is different. Then he goes on offense: "But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." Present tense: I am. The patriarchs are alive. The crowd is astonished.
