Show Don't Tell: Matthew 22:34-40
Instead of saying "Jesus identified the greatest commandments," hear the lawyer's test. The Pharisees hear Jesus silenced the Sadducees and regroup. An expert in the law tests him: "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" Out of 613 commandments, which one? Jesus doesn't hesitate: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' This is the first and greatest commandment." Heart, soul, mind—every dimension of being oriented toward God. "And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" These two aren't alternatives; they're inseparable. You can't love God without loving neighbor. "All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." Everything hangs on love. Not 613 rules but one double-sided principle.
