Instead of saying "Jesus taught discernment about sharing sacred things," picture the pigs trampling. "Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces." Dogs and pigs—unclean animals, symbols of those who cannot appreciate holy things. Imagine holding pearls, precious and gleaming, then tossing them into a pigpen. The pigs sniff, expecting food. Finding nothing edible, they trample the pearls into mud, then turn aggressively on you. Some truths require ready hearts. Some mysteries must be guarded until ears are prepared to hear. Discernment is not elitism—it's wisdom about timing and audience.
