Show Don't Tell: Psalm 121
Instead of saying "God protects his people," lift your eyes. Song of Ascents. "I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from?" Looking at hills surrounding Jerusalem—or the high places where idols stood. "My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth." Not the hills but their Maker. "He will not let your foot slip—he who watches over you will not slumber; indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep." Four verses of watchfulness—foot kept, watcher alert, never sleeping. Contrast to Baal prophets on Carmel: 'Maybe he's sleeping.' "The LORD watches over you—the LORD is your shade at your right hand; the sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon by night." Shade at right hand—protection from sun (heatstroke) and moon (ancient fear of lunar harm). "The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore." Coming and going—leaving home and returning, all of life. Forevermore.
