The Practice of Presence: Finding God in Ordinary Moments

Brother Lawrence, a 17th-century monk, discovered that washing dishes could be as sacred as celebrating Mass. He practiced the 'presence of God'—recognizing that every moment is holy ground (Exodus 3:5). God isn't confined to church buildings or formal prayer times. Jesus promised, 'Where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them' (Matthew 18:20), but Paul reminds us that 'in him we live and move and have our being' (Acts 17:28). God is present everywhere, every moment. The practice of presence involves cultivating awareness of God's companionship throughout ordinary activities. While driving, thank God for the journey. While cooking, pray for those who will share the meal. While walking, notice His creation with gratitude. While listening to a friend, remember that Christ is present in the conversation. This isn't about constant religious thoughts but about underlying awareness—like background music that enriches without dominating. Start with breath prayers: 'Jesus, be with me' on the inhale, 'I trust in you' on the exhale. Practice the Jesus Prayer: 'Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me.' These simple phrases can anchor your heart in God's presence during any activity. The goal isn't to escape ordinary life but to discover that every moment is an opportunity for communion with the Divine.
