To Kill a Mockingbird: Atticus Finch and Standing Alone (Micah 6:8)
Atticus Finch defends Tom Robinson knowing he will lose. The whole town knows Tom is innocent; the whole town will convict him anyway. Atticus stands anyway. "What does the Lord require of you? To act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God." Atticus acts justly in an unjust system, shows mercy to those who hate him, and walks humbly—he doesn't preach to his children; he shows them. Scout asks why he's defending Tom if he knows he'll lose. Atticus replies: "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win."
