Faith Alone Establishes the Human Heart
"If ye will not believe, surely ye shall not be established." — Isaiah 7:9
Faith in the Divine Word and Yahweh's promises forms the sole ground of the believer's establishment and happiness. Human hope derives from only two sources: sense and faith.
Sense as a Source of Happiness
History and present experience reveal that sensory enjoyments—however refined—cannot establish the human heart or quiet the restless spirit. Three insurmountable obstacles prevent worldly pursuits from yielding lasting joy: First, the difficulty of acquiring what we imagine will satisfy us. Second, when we finally obtain our desired object through infinite labour, disappointment strikes swiftly, intensified by our previous hopeful prospects and idealized estimate of what we have lost. Third, even supposing we could acquire and retain our desires until death, our very wishes would not sustain our relish for them.
Faith Alone Quiets the Restless Spirit
Only faith offers objects that can establish the human heart. Nothing else can effectually remove the cause of our disordered state and prove a never-failing source of inward peace. Our disquietude amid sensory abundance stems from departure from our original constitutional nature—we were created for communion with Elohim alone. The remedy faith provides directs us to the dikaiosyne (righteousness) of Adonai, manifested without the law yet witnessed by law and prophets: the righteousness of Christ crucified and risen.
