Isaiah's Children as Living Signs of God's Mercy
The Hebrews understood that names carried prophetic weight—the omen in the nomen, the sign embedded in the very word itself. Isaiah embodied this truth through his children, whose names became living proclamations to Judah.
One name spoke terror: "Speed-spoil, Hasten-booty" predicted the Assyrian invasion with all its cruelty and devastation. Yet three names countered this darkness with Jehovah's mercy. Shear-jashub ("a remnant shall return") assured the people that God would preserve a faithful remnant even from Assyrian bondage. Immanuel ("God with us") promised divine presence through every peril and reversal. And Isaiah himself—"Jehovah is salvation"—pointed toward ultimate redemption from all evil.
This pattern illuminates Christian parenting. Parents transmit influence not primarily through words but through invisible moral power flowing directly from the depths of their own character into their children's souls. Children perceive authenticity with piercing clarity; they know us more intimately than anyone else.
Faithfulness becomes the first instrument of this influence—a firm, steady family rule exercised with calm authority. The Psalmist's resolve captures it: "I will behave myself wisely in a perfect way; I will walk within my house with a perfect heart."
Yet parental influence is easily marred. Over-indulgence, endless softness, and refusal to exercise wise authority undermine both prayers and children's formation. Our character, stamped upon our offspring's souls, remains our most potent legacy.
